Chinese

The biggest problem with Chinese is that most of the favorite dishes are coated in batter, deep-fried and served with a heap of rice or noodles. Skip the wontons, potstickers, rice and chow mein, skip anything that's crispy (always look for steamed, roasted or stir-fried,) and skip anything that has a heavy or sugary sauce (like the ones that come with egg foo young and orange chicken.)

EAT THIS
* Best Sauces - Fish sauce, garlic sauce, black bean sauce, Szechwan sauce, curry sauce, ginger soy sauce, Chinese mustard.
* Chicken or Pork Skewers - a delicious, satisfying appetizer and a healthy option if the meat is roasted, steamed or baked. Skewers often come with thick, fatty sauces, which you should always request on the side.
* Seafood/Sizzling Rice/Happy Family Soup - a light broth chock-full of Chinese greens, mushrooms, chicken, shrimp and/or scallops, and sometimes pork. If it's "Sizzling Rice" soup, skip the side of crispy rice served with it.
* Egg Drop/Egg Flower Soup - because it's broth-based, this soup tends to be lower-calorie than many other options on the menu.
* Meat with Vegetables - any kind of steamed or stir-fried dish of vegetables and lean meat is most likely a safe choice.  Some common dishes include: Mushroom Chicken, Green Bean Chicken, Garlic Chicken, Peppercorn Beef, Szechuan Shrimp, and so on. If it comes with sauce, ask for it on the side.
* Moo Shu - skip the pancakes and simply enjoy the delicious stir-fried meat and veggies by themselves.
* Happy Family/Seafood Hot Plate - a heaping serving of yummy seafood and veggies, stir-fried in a clear, broth-based sauce.
* Egg Foo Yung - because it's literally a dish of fried egg patties (with your choice of veggies and/or meat,)it's surprising that it's actually relatively low-calorie and low-carb.  Just make sure to bypass the heavy gravy that comes with it.

AVOID THIS
* Worst Sauces:  Sweet-and-Sour, lobster sauce, duck sauce, Hoisin, plum sauce, oyster sauce, peanut sauce, Egg Foo Yung gravy.
* Lo Mein and Fried Rice - as if these carb-laden starch dishes weren't bad enough, they're usually pan-fried in oil and doused with extra fatty sauces.
* Fried Appetizers & Entrees - it goes without saying that any weight-conscious diner should avoid the battered-and-fried fare that tends to overcrowd Chinese menus, but also be wary of dishes that have added oil or are cooked in fats.
