EAT THIS
* Ceviche and Salsa are two of the best sides/appetizers on the menu, low in calories and fat and full of fresh vegetables. Ceviche is tasty and thick enough all by itself that you can just eat with a spoon. * Albondigas Soup - a broth-based soup with meatballs and vegetables. Delicious, savory, filling, and very diet-friendly.
* Taco Salad - of course you know that salads are always a smart option, as long as you pass on the fatty ingredients and dressings. Mexican food is no different, and Mexican salads are perfect for the weight-conscious, and all you need to do is order the taco (or tostada) salad without the taco (or tostada.)
* Fajitas and Carne Asada - grilled chicken, pork or steak with onions and peppers, and all you need to do is ignore the accompanying tortillas and enjoy the spicy, flavorful dish with a fork.
* Chili Verde - a stew-like pork dish that is slow-cooked to perfect tenderness. Much like fajitas and carne asada, all you need to do is skip the tortillas.
* Mole Pollo - bone-in chicken breast served with a dark spicy sauce.
* Camarones de Hacha - prawns cooked in red and green tomato sauce.
* Black or Whole Red (Pinto) Beans - when prepared in a broth or their own juices, without added fat or oils, they make a great high-fiber side-dish option.
* Healthy Burritos or Enchiladas (with Red or Green Sauce) - a burrito or enchilada that is filled with lean meat, vegetables, fresh beans and a bit of shredded cheese is basically just a healthy meal that's been wrapped up- just ask for a whole wheat tortilla, or open it up and only eat what's inside!
AVOID THIS
* Tortilla Chips - much like bread baskets, they're a temptation to be avoided.* Refried Beans - the only healthy ingredient (beans) is overpowered by the cooking method, which incorporates lots lard, oil and and fatty cheeses.
* Fried Dishes - it goes without saying, but anything that's fried (chimichangas, taquitos, etc) are to be avoided.
